The wild flower planting on the Field last Wednesday (6th Oct) was nothing short of a triumph – Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to get the job done in record time. Well done!
The picture on the Home page shows local volunteers (both young and not-so-young) hard at work with the splendid team from the Council. Together they planted several thousand plug plants in the new Wild Flower meadow.
We were delighted to welcome a stream of visitors ranging from interested locals to Councillors and the Rev. Carol, the new vicar of Christ Church. (Someone had clearly put in a good word for us as the sun shone all morning!) We are very pleased to say Rev Carol will be visiting us again for the Remembrance Day events.

Many of you will be aware that Paul, our dynamic Chairman, overreached himself a few weeks ago by having a go at flying without any wings. He ended up seriously injured. This picture proves that he is well on the mend – he’s the one on the right, surrounded by small plant pots, each one marking the position of a newly planted wild flower.
Attention now turns to THIS SUNDAY, 10th October from 11am
We need lots more volunteers as there are many jobs remaining to be done and the Council team have the weekend off, so they won’t be there to help us this time.
Planned work will include:
- planting another 1000 plug plants in a second meadow area nearer Borrowdale Road.
- removing any coppiced willow
- clearing brambles encroaching on the Field
- raking and moving any remaining scythed grass
- clearing the grass and vegetation surrounding the 750 trees we planted in Jean Argles wood, to help the trees to thrive.
- possibly litter picking on the Derwent road verge thanks to motorists who chuck stuff out of their cars. NB: this will need to be done by adults/carefully monitored children due to the proximity of the road.
We hope to be joined by our MP Cat Smith, our County Councillor Lizzi Collinge and the Green Leader of Lancaster City Council, Caroline Jackson.
Please come along even if only for a short time. Children are most welcome, to join in or just play – as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.
Please bring along relevant tools – wheelbarrows, rakes, secateurs, trowels and of course gloves will all be needed and we only have limited supplies.
