Many of you will remember planting the new wood on the Field. In glorious winter weather a big work party planted 750 saplings at the end of 2019. The following winter was very wet and we feared for the survival of the trees, but in Spring 2020 small leaves appeared, just as the pandemic and lockdowns started.
These trees have now grown substantially. Well over 90% seem to have survived and most are very healthy, although some (including the oaks) grow much slower, perhaps because they expect to have a much longer life!
The work party last Sunday (8th May 2022) removed supporting stakes and plastic tree guards and cleared the ground around each young tree. Many thanks to the 30 volunteers for their hard work – clearing rough grass from around young trees is not the easiest task but at least it was sunny! Special thanks to our local representatives , City Council leader Caroline Jackson, and County Councillor Lizzie Collinge who gave up their time to come along and help. Also to City Council employees
