History

Col. Joseph Lawson-Whalley (pictured on the right) was Miss Whalley’s father. Capt. Julian Lawson-Whalley (on the left) was her brother. In the Trust Deed, Miss Whalley states that the reason for her generous gift to the City of Lancaster, (ie: money to purchase a piece of land for children to play on) was to commemorate the lives of her late father & brother.

Therefore, this is a crucial historical link between the Field & the City of Lancaster. One which we are keen to acknowledge by creating a, ‘memorial’ on the Field so that the public can better understand its history.
