New Wood – new work party

Back in 2019, when Covid hadn’t been heard of, a huge work-party of local people, supported by the Council, planted 750 saplings on the Field in glorious winter sunshine. Miss Argles Wood was born! Despite the very wet winter that year, almost all the trees survived and young leaves appeared the following Spring as we all entered lockdown.

Last Sunday (May 8th 2022) another work party of 30 volunteers returned to the wood to remove stakes and tree guards and to clear the ground around the young saplings. The group gathered first to be briefed by Chairman Paul Wiggins……..

Then it was down to work…..

All the plastic tree-guards and stakes were removed and will be recycled by the Council. Many trees also had the thick grass cleared from around their stems.

Particular thanks are due to our friends from the City Council  and also to County Councillor Lizzi Collinge (a very loyal supporter of the Field – she’s in the picture above in the black T shirt), and to the Leader of our City Council, Caroline Jackson from the Green Party, seen here sharing a joke with Paul Wiggins….

We really appreciate these busy people giving up part of their Sunday to support our efforts.

Why not go along and have a look at how the new wood is getting on? Only 2 years ago this was nothing more than muddy rough grass. Now we have a new wood and it’s all due to local people and our partners in the Council.

Well done all……..now we’ve just got to keep going!
